What are Fears and Phobias?

A phobia is a particular kind of anxiety disorder; in fact it is the most common form of anxiety.

A phobia is a persistent fear of an object or situation which you may find yourself going to great lengths to avoid.

Your phobia is a sign of internal anxiety – something inside you, but outside of your control

Most people seem to have one or two phobias, and often they may seem not to affect their life a great deal.

They may avoid situations that will make them have to confront their fears, for example, not going abroad if they have a phobia of flying, or not going camping in case of spiders if they have arachnophobia.

Social phobia is also one of the more common, but complex, phobias.

If you are affected by this type of anxiety then meeting people may cause anxiety, and you’re probably overly worried about what others think of you, or about how you appear to other people.

Maybe a one-to-one meeting is fine but group situations cause you problems.

It could be that you suffer severe anxiety about speaking or performing in public or any ‘on the spot’ type situation.

Perhaps answering a knock on the door or using the telephone causes a great deal of anxiety.

Of course, it’s only natural to sometimes feel a bit nervous in these situations, but people with social phobia find these activities impossible.

Agoraphobia, another common phobia, is a fear of various places and situations, such as crowds or public places, and is frequently associated with panic or anxiety attacks.

Whatever a person’s phobia is, it may hold a very real and intense fear to them, and can have a very detrimental effect on their life.

Below is a list of the more common fears and phobias that I get consulted about:

● Spiders – Arachnophobia
Being sick – Emetophobia (may also be known as phagophobia, vomitophobia, vomit phobia, sickness phobia)
● Flying  – aviatopophobia
● Water – Hydrophobia
● Heights – Acrophobia
● Enclosed spaces – Claustrophobia
● Open spaces – Agorophobia
● Crowds – Demophobia
● Darkness – Nyctophobia
● Dentists – Odontophobia
● Speaking in public – Glossophobia
● Needles – Aichmophobia
● Death or dying – Thanatophobia
● Being judged or put on the spot – Social Phobia, or Scopophobia.
● Urinating in front of others, shy bladder, paruresis, toilet anxiety or toilet phobia
● Defecating (either alone, or in earshot of others), stools and losing bowel control – Coprophobia, or Corporophobia

The list of fears and phobias is endless as people really can be fearful of anything in their thoughts and lives so please don’t think that we can’t help you if your fear or phobia is not listed above.

What is important is that, if your fear or phobia is having a negative impact upon you, or if it is limiting your full participation in life, or if your fear or phobia is becoming more severe and is beginning to dominate your life then it is probably time to do something about it and take steps to rid yourself of your fear or phobia.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Fears & Phobias

There are a number of therapies that can really support you resolving your fear or phobia:

Suggestion Therapy

Perhaps there is an upcoming event that they would like specific help with.

For example, perhaps you want to go on holiday, but have a fear of flying and want help to get you onto the flight, or perhaps you have a fear of dogs and are soon to go and stay with a friend who has a dog.

For these types of issue, hypnosis, combined with suggestion therapy will enable you to reduce your fear or anxiety and to feel more in control.

Suggestion therapy is “normal” hypnotherapy; it’s what most people [including references in the media] are referring to when they talk of hypnotherapy.

Suggestion therapy is a short period of hypnotherapy treatment, usually requiring one, two or three sessions designed to produce a behavioural change in the person by addressing their symptoms.
